Remove Cracked, Loose Tint from an Interior Windshield and Install a New Piece of Tint

Harold Ross

If the window tint that is running along the top portion of the interior side of your van's windshield is cracked and coming loose from the glass, remove it and replace it with a new piece of tint by completing the steps below. The replacement tint will block the sun's rays and improve your visibility while on the road.

Materials

  • sponge
  • soapy water
  • utility knife
  • plastic scraper
  • glass cleaner
  • lint-free cloths
  • measuring tape
  • scissors
  • self-adhesive tint
  • pair of surgical gloves
  • spray bottle
  • water
  • mild detergent
  • squeegee

Remove the Damaged Tint and Clean the Windshield

Moisten the damaged tint with a soapy sponge. Use a utility knife to cut into one of the edges of the tint. While piercing the tint, avoid pressing the tip of the knife directly against the windshield's interior because doing so may permanently scratch the glass. Grasp the edge of the tint that was cut with the knife with one of your hands and pull the tint away from the glass.

Use a plastic putty knife to scrape away any sections of the tint that are stuck against the glass. Once the old tint has been disposed of, clean the windshield's interior with a lint-free cloth that has a small amount of glass cleaner added to it. Dry the glass surface with another cloth.

Measure the Glass and Apply the Tint

Measure the length and width of the section of the windshield's interior that you would like to cover with tint. Cut a piece of self-adhesive tint that is the same size. Put on a pair of surgical gloves before removing the paper backing from the tint. The gloves will prevent your fingerprints from appearing on the tint. After lining the tint up with the glass, press it firmly against the interior surface. Fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of detergent that doesn't contain any additives to the bottle.

Mix the water and detergent by gently shaking the bottle for a few seconds. Apply a light coating of the soapy water to each corner of the tint. The soapy water will help hold the edges of the tint in place. Move a squeegee across the window tint in smooth lines. By doing so, you will press the tint flat against the glass and eliminate any wrinkles in the window covering. Maintain the film by removing surface dirt with a gentle cleaning agent and a soft cloth when needed.

Understanding The Benefits of Mobile Windshield Repair

After I started commuting a lot, I realized that there were a few problems with the process of driving behind large trucks all day long. I was picking up rock chips all day long, and it was devastating to my windshield. Pretty soon, I found myself struggling to see through my windshield, and it was really hard to drive safely. I started focusing carefully on avoiding problems, and I found a mobile windshield repair business that was dedicated to making things right. They came out to my work, fixed my windshield as my car sat in the parking lot, and made me feel a lot better. This blog is all about working with great windshield repair places.
